According to Merriam-Webster, a curriculum vitae is “a short account of one’s career and qualifications prepared typically by an applicant for a position”—in other words, a sophisticated and academically oriented résumé.

The CV is often required for academics, researchers, scientists, and educators. Depending on the country, it can be several pages long or quite brief like a résumé. In the US, the CV is often several pages long and provides more detailed focus on education, research positions, publications, professional associations, etc.
